Kathryn Coogler Barton

Kathryn Coogler Barton passed away the evening of June 6th, 2007.

Mrs. Barton was pre-deceased by her parents, Paul Lamar and Virginia Cornwall Coogler of Chester, South Carolina as well as six of her seven brothers.

She is survived by her husband of sixty-one years, William Jackson Barton of Savannah. Also surviving are her son, William Jackson Barton, Jr., his wife, Susan Kuster Barton of Savannah and their three daughters, Catherine Lamar, Julia Cornwall and Elise Flowers Barton. Also surviving are her daughter, Virginia Barton Jarrett and her husband Shields Jarrett of Roanoke, VA. Mrs. Barton’s youngest brother, Edward Coogler survives her as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Barton attended Winthrop College and was a graduate of Appalachian State University where she was on the May Court. She taught elementary education in the public school systems of North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia. She was a former member of the Junior League, the Savannah Women’s Club, the Bonaventure Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the United Daughters of the Confederacy. For many years she was an active member of Cokesbury United Methodist Church and at the time of her death was a member of Isle of Hope United Methodist Church.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday the 9th of June at Isle of Hope United Methodist Church. The family will greet guests immediately following the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests gifts to Spanish Oaks Hospice, the Isle of Hope United Methodist Church, of the Alzheimer’s Association.
